Course expectations
- Read ALL of the following material on my website;syllabus, schedule, faqs.
- Complete the CATE check-in process. If you do not check-in within a week of the beginning of class you may be dropped at the discretion of the instructor.
- Watch online videos, read chapters, when applicable, and complete assignments before class time on their due date.
- Post your questions to the FORUM. Fellow students usually answer your questions. I monitor the forum.
Getting Help
- Office hours- This is the BEST option for getting individualized assistance.
- Forum- Good for meeting students and checking through the knowledge base.
- Email- Good for short questions only. I am not a private tutor and do not deal with code problems via email.
Homework and Tests
- For face-to-face classes homework is due before class time on the due date. For online classes it is due midnight of the due date.
- Test your page BEFORE you post your homework. Once homework is posted and graded I will not grade it again.
- You can submit one late assignment per semester. Aside from that there is no credit given for late work. It is your responsibility to email me after posting your late work.
- All tests are administered online and are available for one week as per the assignments page. There is a 120 minute time limit on tests. For all tests I suggest you go to the test page, print out the test and complete it offline. then go back and fill out the test and submit it.
Do I need a web site and, if so, how do I set up an account on student.santarosa.edu?
- You need a web site for Introduction to Digital Media class but not Flash Animation class. If you already have one that you are comfortable using feel free to use that.
- To set up an account on student.santarosa.edu, read the document Setting Up an Account on the Student Server
- Go to the website and complete the application process. Make sure to create the WWW directory
- If there are problems with the student server contact student-info@santarosa.edu for support. I have no ability to help with the student server.
What if I cannot upload my files?
- If you get a message stating that individual files cannot upload use your student.santarosa.edu username and password and check your QUOTA REPORT. Anything over 100000 blocks means you have no storage space and cannot upload until you remove some files from your student server web space.
What passwords do I need?
- Use the password you set up during the CATE check-in for access to grades, online tests, and the dropbox.
- Use the password that you created when you logged into the fourm. NOTE: The Forum does not have a password recovery tool. Write down this password.
- Use the password that you received for access to your web pages on student.santarosa.edu
Browser info
Not all browsers are the same and some can be troublesome delivering multimedia content and adhering to CSS standards. I have listed the most common browsers in their order of popularity and provided links for you to download the newest versions.
- Internet Explorer for Windows
- Mozilla Firefox for Windows, Mac, and Linux
- Chrome for Windows and Mac
- Safari for Mac and Safari 4 for Windows
What happens if I update my page and I know I put the new copy to the remote server, yet my page doesn't change in the browser window?
Try refreshing the page. You can find this in various places in different browsers; easy question to Google for specifics.
Do I need to use the version of the software listed in the syllabus for this class?
- Yes. See your class home page for specifics.
I am having problems with an assignment. What do I do?
- Stop after 30 minutes, take a break and if you still cannot make any progress.
- Check the instructor’s schedule of office hours and meet with him
- Post your problem to the appropriate Forum. If it is an easy one it will be responded to by an advanced student or by the instructor. If you do not receive a response in one day email the instructor and attach the file in question
Do I have to take all the prerequisites before signing up for a class?
- You cannot sign up for a class if you haven't taken the prerequisistes. However, if you have experience in the subject, you can challenge it by filing the Prerequisite Equivalency Form with Admissions and Records. Once you fill it out, you can deliver it or fax it to A & R, your request is reviewed, and you are added to the class.
Can I repeat a class I have already taken?
- It depends on the class. If you try to register and the system tells you you can't because you have already taken the class, you can file a Petition for a Waiver of College Regulations.
Dropping a Class
If you decide to discontinue this course, it is your responsibility to officially drop it to avoid getting no refund (after 10% of course length), a W symbol (after 20%), or a grade (after 60%). Also, for several consecutive, unexplained absences, the instructor may drop a student.
Online Class Assistance
- Online classes are LIVE classes. See the schedule page for the specific times the classes are held. You are NOT required to be present during these classes but you ARE required to watch the archives if you do not attend the LIVE class.
- College Skills 334 "How to Take an Online Class" is a perfect half-unit course designed to teach all the concepts and skills students need to master for taking online classes at SRJC. No textbook is required, and three-week sections begin on 5 September and 18 September (as well as later in the semester).

Online classes are live classes that use the Adobe Connect application. Online students are required to log in and participate in these sessions and/or watch the archives of these sessions.
- Make sure you read through the Adobe Connect Visual Quickstart Guide
- The web browser version requires that you allow the use of the Flash Player plug-in
- You can also download the Connect App for iPhone and iPad and Android
- You will need either headphones or speakers.
- A separate phone line is not necessary. These services are delivered through Voice Over IP (VOIP)
- A microphone is optional for office hours and not needed for the online lectures.
