Welcome to Introduction to Linux! I'm your instructor, Eric Skagerberg, and you'll find my recorded lectures and transcripts from the Spring 2022 course on the Modules page of your course material on the SRJC Canvas course site.

Our Linux Essentials course material is free online for students of this course. You won't need to buy a book. Although we have some recommended books in the SRJC bookstore, they're for reference only, and you won't require them.

You'll work with two course web sites:

  • Our main SRJC Canvas site, which contains:
    • All the primary information for this SRJC course
    • Discussion assignments
    • Review quizzes: mid-term and final
  • Our Cisco Networking Academy course material site, Linux Essentials by Network Development Group (NDG), which contains:
    • NDG's reading chapters
    • Lab assignments
    • Chapter exams
    • Mid-term and final exams

Here's how to get started:

  1. By the start of the semester, your instructor will provide separate Cisco Networking Academy student account access to the Linux Essentials course material, so you can log in there and begin working.
    1. If you already have a Cisco Networking Academy account from a previous course, please use that user name and password to log in.
    2. If you do not have a previous Cisco Networking Academy account, look for a course invitation email by the start of the course. Follow the directions to establish your user name and password. If you do not find an invitiation email, even in your Junk or Spam folder, please contact your intstructor immediately.
  2. Read the Course Information.
  3. Read the Assignments & Exams Schedule.
  4. Read Zoom: Getting Started to prepare yourself and your computer for the online recorded lectures.
  5. In the SRJC Canvas site, open the Modules section for the assignments and lecture recordings.
  6. Optional: Make your own Linux system: see the Portable Linux page.
